Massive arrivals of Peruvian avocados to Europe in August: Impact on prices and sales
We're entering August, which will undoubtedly see the peak of Peruvian shipments to Europe. This is a significant increase for a month that is typically slow for sales due to the high number of people on vacation. The real key will be the distribution of sizes within these containers. If the flow of shipments is concentrated in a specific size range, it could put undue pressure on that range, which would contradict the expected drop in volume following this uncertain end to the season.
After a summer season with very high prices compared to other seasons, as we enter this peak of arrivals, prices are feeling the effects of falling down since arrivals for the first time in a long time exceed the hypothetical European consumption line.
While European operators' stocks were quite low, August has always been a difficult month for sales. Despite this, the lack of volume in September arrivals may lead many to extend their delivery schedules to last as long as possible, if dry matter availability allows.
We are currently experiencing a season with relatively few quality problems overall. However, the fruit we are seeing is arriving with high dry matter content, which means that this fruit requires a high level of rotation and attention.
