Westfalia Fruit boosts the avocado market in India with imports from Kenya

Westfalia Fruit continues its expansion in India with its first shipment of avocados from Kenya, consolidating its position as a key player in the country's imported avocado market.

India has experienced remarkable growth in avocado imports, with a 450% increase between 2019-2020 and 2022-2023, according to the World Avocado Organization. This market has grown by 100% year-on-year over the past two years, with Westfalia Fruit India leading sales with over 50% of the market.

Westfalia Fruit supplies the Indian market not only with avocados from Kenya, but also from Chile, Peru, and Australia, allowing consumers to enjoy the fruit year-round. The company also manages over 60% of Tanzania's avocado exports to India and 85% of its Australian avocado exports.

In 2024, Westfalia Fruit had its first commercial production in India and expects to harvest more than 500 acres of Hass avocado orchards in the future. Zac Bard, Westfalia Fruit's business development executive, emphasized the importance of East Africa in meeting India's demand for avocados, noting that new market access granted to Australia and South Africa will allow for year-round production and complement East African volumes.
