A 9.5% increase brings Tanzania's agricultural exports to $2.3 billion in two years
According to reports from the Tanzanian Ministry of Agriculture, the value of agricultural exports reached $2.3 billion in 2023, up from $2.1 billion in 2020/21, representing a 9.5% increase. This growth has been attributed primarily to exports of coffee, tobacco, cashews, rice, sesame, pulses, and especially avocados.
Agriculture Minister Hussein Bashe stated that "avocados have been exported to the Netherlands, France, the United Kingdom, Spain, Belgium, Russia, Germany, Norway, South Africa, India, and the United Arab Emirates. In 2024, Tanzania will begin exporting avocados to China."
Regarding agricultural production, it increased from 17,148,290 to 20,402,014 tons, marking a 19% rise. Bashe highlighted that "commercial crops such as cashews, cotton, pyrethrum, coffee, tobacco, tea, sisal, sugar, and cocoa increased from 983,177 to 1,291,006.64 tons, a 31.3% increase."
Horticultural crop production also saw an increase, reaching 7,723,115.66 tons, as a result of Tanzania opening up to more foreign markets.
