Port of Chancay: Peru's new gateway to global trade with Asia
The Port of Chancay, a strategic investment backed by Chinese capital through Cosco Shipping, will transform Peru into a crucial logistics hub for trade between South America and Asia. This mega-port project, located 80 km north of Lima, boasts a prime location that facilitates access to global markets.
Designed to include terminals for containers, solid bulk cargo, and liquid bulk cargo, the Port of Chancay has been conceived to alleviate congestion at the Port of Callao and position itself as an alternative port with advanced technology. The port's features will allow for greater cargo handling capacity and reduced waiting times, resulting in increased efficiency in maritime operations.
The main attraction of this port is the significant reduction in shipping times to Asia, especially to China, via the port of Shanghai. Currently, maritime routes between Peru and China take between 23 and 25 days, but with the opening of the port of Chancay, this time will be reduced to just 10 days, optimizing delivery times for Peruvian products such as minerals, agricultural products, and manufactured goods.
Furthermore, the port will not only connect Peru with Asia, but will also make it a strategic hub for the transit of goods to other markets in Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and the rest of Southeast Asia. This new dynamic will allow Peruvian companies to have faster and more economical access to these markets, making their products more competitive globally. The port will also foster the development of new value and distribution chains.
The project, which has required multimillion-dollar investments, also includes the construction of modern infrastructure such as an underground tunnel connecting the port to the land operations area, eliminating the need to cross urban areas and ensuring more efficient and less disruptive transportation. This project is part of a planned expansion that aims to transform Chancay into a regional logistics hub, integrating Peru into major international trade routes.
With the implementation of the Port of Chancay, economic growth is expected for Peru due to increased exports and the attraction of new investments. This could translate into a strengthening of the country's position as a key point in global logistics networks, competing with other strategic ports in the region such as Buenaventura in Colombia and Valparaíso in Chile.
