Peru leads the European avocado market while large sizes face price pressure

During week 27, the European avocado market received a total of 1,045 containers, representing a 3% decrease compared to the previous week. Peru continues to consolidate its dominance in the region with 81% of the total volume, while Colombia and South Africa maintain similar levels with 7% and 6%, respectively. Kenya and Tanzania share 5%, and Brazil has a marginal share.

Volumes from Peru showed no significant changes, registering only a 2% decrease compared to the previous week. In contrast, South Africa reduced its shipments by 19%, and Colombia by 12%, contributing to the overall decline in total shipments.

Regarding prices, the trend varied depending on the size and market. In Rotterdam, size 18 saw a notable drop of 18% compared to the previous week, while smaller sizes, such as size 30, remained more stable, with a marginal decrease of 1%. This trend has created an unusual situation: smaller sizes are fetching better prices than larger sizes, at least in this market.

In Spain, prices have remained relatively constant compared to the previous week. No significant variations have been recorded, suggesting a degree of stability in local demand.

Various industry stakeholders have warned that consumption of alternative fruits tends to increase during July and August, which could impact avocado demand. In this context, a significant presence of large-sized avocados, between sizes 12 and 22, has been observed, putting downward pressure on prices due to their ample availability.

Conversely, sizes between 24 and 32 are experiencing a better market situation. Their lower availability has allowed prices to remain at higher levels, highlighting a trend that temporarily favors smaller fruit.
