Peru closes 2024 with lower volumes but higher value in avocado exports
Despite adverse weather conditions, the Peruvian avocado sector managed to compensate for the drop in export volume with an increase in prices, reaching record revenues of US$1.27 billion.
The year 2024 presented challenges for avocado production in Peru, affected by irregular weather conditions that reduced the harvest. However, the agricultural export sector showed resilience and closed the season on a positive note, exporting approximately 587,000 tons of fresh avocados through September, generating revenues of nearly US$1.26 billion. Although the export volume decreased by 9%, the 23% increase in value, with an average price of US$2.15 per kilogram, mitigated the negative impact.
Europe once again solidified its position as the main market for Peruvian avocados, absorbing 68% of exports. Despite a slight decrease in shipments to that destination, a 36% increase in average prices helped maintain profitability. In contrast, shipments to the United States fell by 16%, although a 35% increase in prices also boosted the sector's profits.
With a long-term vision, some producers opted to pause the campaign to preserve the crops, leaving a positive outlook for 2025. It is expected that, if weather conditions improve, the next harvest could experience a significant increase in volume, further boosting exports of this key product in the Peruvian agribusiness sector.
