Small Peruvian producers join the Hass avocado export chain
ProHass and Agromercado signed an agreement to improve the competitiveness of small farmers, who will now have access to better market opportunities and technologies to boost avocado exports in Peru.
The Peruvian Hass Avocado Producers and Exporters Association (ProHass) has taken a significant step in supporting small-scale producers by signing an agreement with Agromercado. This three-year agreement aims to facilitate the integration of family farmers into the export chain by providing them with tools and technical knowledge that will improve their opportunities in international markets.
Juan Carlos Paredes, president of ProHass, highlighted that small farmers represent about a third of Peru's avocado supply, contributing between US$350 and US$400 million annually. "We want the experience of ProHass's partners to be transferred to small producers so they can develop into successful entrepreneurs," Paredes stated, emphasizing the importance of this agreement for the sector's growth and sustainability.
Furthermore, the agreement will help to stabilize the supply of Peruvian avocados throughout the year, increasing the product's presence in global markets. Paredes added that a better season is expected in 2024-2025, thanks to abundant flowering and favorable conditions in the northern production areas of the country.
