Mexico leads avocado production amid growth push in Latin America

In 2023, Mexico solidified its position as the world's leading avocado producer, reaching a volume of 1.9 million tons, according to reports from the Mexican Ministry of Agriculture. This achievement underscores its dominance in the industry both in Latin America and globally. Colombia followed closely behind as the second-largest producer with an output of approximately 980,000 tons, while Peru and Chile trailed with over 770,000 tons and 150,000 tons, respectively, according to FAO data.

Mauricio Auger, an international consultant in the avocado sector, highlighted the technical and strategic advances that have allowed Mexico to lead global exports. The country has advanced irrigation systems and a rich diversity of native insects that facilitate pollination, although it faces challenges related to water access, given the depth of its wells.

Auger also observed an evolution in Mexican agricultural practices toward more precise irrigation, based on soil moisture measurement. In contrast, Colombia enjoys favorable growing conditions in warm, low-lying areas, but its commercial value is affected by its timing coinciding with Peru's harvest season, and it faces significant agronomic limitations due to soil conditions.

Peru, Auger noted, has a climate conducive to avocado cultivation, although excessive flowering can stress the trees and affect production. Chile, on the other hand, faces climatic constraints that limit avocado production, leading growers to explore regions further south.

Auger concluded by noting the promising potential of Ecuador and Guatemala in the avocado sector and emphasized the potential growth of Colombia, despite the challenges in establishing efficient orchards.
