Colombian avocados continue to increase their presence in the US market

Colombia, a global supplier of Hass avocados, is at the height of its naughty flowering season, with weekly shipments of more than 50 containers to the U.S.

Colombia, one of the world's leading suppliers of Hass avocados, is in the midst of its peak flowering season, with weekly shipments of more than 50 containers to the U.S. market. This growth is due to significant year-over-year increases and the maturity of the country's growing regions. Currently, more than 400 growers and a dozen packing sheds are certified to export to the U.S.

Colombian avocados are available year-round thanks to the country's tropical climate, which allows for multiple flowering periods and two main harvests: the off-season (April to August) and the main harvest (September to January). Manuel Michel, executive director of the Colombia Avocado Board (CAB), highlights the sector's commitment to sustainability and biodiversity, as well as leveraging its logistical advantages for shipments to the East Coast of the United States.

Since Colombia gained access to the US market in 2018, the growth and popularity of its avocados have increased significantly. The 2023 season concluded with a record 14.5 million kilos shipped, and a 50% increase is expected for 2024, reaching 22.68 million kilos. This growth has been facilitated by improvements in the country's infrastructure and the sector's continued development.
