India is emerging as a key market for avocados

The World Avocado Organization's (WAO) successful social media campaign is redirecting a large amount of avocado production from African countries such as Morocco, Kenya, Tanzania and South Africa from Europe to India.

The president of the Association of Hass Avocado Producers and Exporters of Peru (ProHass), Juan Carlos Paredes Rosales, highlighted the importance of not only focusing on quality, but also on opening new markets and continuous promotion in the competitive avocado industry.

"This will mean a lot of production. So, we need to promote avocados in other markets, for example, with a campaign—which I think is excellent—in India. It's a country of 1.4 billion people, of whom 350 million are vegetarians," Paredes emphasized.

The president of ProHass noted that this strategy diversifies the distribution of the fruit outside of Europe, allowing for a more equitable distribution worldwide. "One surprise we'll see in the coming years is the increase in consumption in India," he added.

Paredes also mentioned the plight of over 17,000 small-scale avocado farmers in Peru, who face challenges due to the current agricultural situation. He emphasized the crucial role of the government and ProHass in assisting these farmers by providing them with training on best agricultural practices.

"The regional governments and the central government were the ones who promoted the planting of a lot of avocados, as always they did it late, "When the commercial windows had already closed," Paredes noted, expressing the need for timely support for these producers in critical moments.
