Grupo Bonella expands its exclusive Bonella avocado brand in Europe

São Paulo-based Grupo Bonella highlights the price similarity between its exclusive Bonella avocado and the popular Hass variety, underscoring its expansion and success in the European market.

São Paulo, Brazil-based avocado producer and exporter Grupo Bonella is cultivating an exclusive avocado variety called Bonella. According to CEO Fernando Bonella, the Bonella avocado is priced very similarly to the Hass variety, and the company is working on expanding production of this new variety, which has recently begun harvesting. The Bonella variety is marketed under the Avocado Green brand and exported throughout Europe and neighboring countries, including Germany, Spain, France, the Netherlands, Portugal, Argentina, Uruguay, and Bolivia. This year, the group estimates a production volume of 8,000 tons, most of which is destined for Europe.

Grupo Bonella's avocado production has not been affected by the recent torrential rains and flooding in southern Brazil, as its operations are located in the southeast of the country. The company owns 3,000 hectares, 1,680 of which are dedicated to avocado cultivation. Of these, 680 hectares are planted with the Hass and the exclusive Bonella varieties, for which the company holds cultivation rights for 25 years, while the remaining 1,000 hectares are planted with tropical avocados. In addition, the group cultivates mangoes, pitahaya, coffee, lemons, oranges, ponka (a type of fruit), and persimmons. The Bonella variety, discovered by José Alcides Bonella, father of the current CEO, is notable for being similar to the Hass but with more nutrients and a creamy texture, gaining positive recognition both in Brazil and abroad.

Founded in 1969, Grupo Bonella is one of the largest avocado producers and marketers in Brazil, now managed by the third generation of the family. The company focuses on highly sustainable management, operating biofactories, an organic composting center, and a laboratory for pest and disease control. With all the necessary certifications, such as Global GAP, GRASP, SMETA, and Rainforest Alliance, Grupo Bonella demonstrates its commitment to sustainable management and has been recognized as a great place to work through the GPTW (Great Place to Work) seal.
