Fresh Direct launches plastic-free packaging for avocados in the UK
Fresh Direct, a leading supplier of fresh produce to the UK catering industry, has introduced plastic-free packaging for avocados in collaboration with Westfalia Fruit, marking a milestone in the catering sector.
Fresh Direct has launched an innovative plastic-free packaging solution for its two-avocado pack, developed in collaboration with its main supplier, Westfalia Fruit. This pioneering initiative replaces conventional plastic packaging with paper-based alternatives sourced from sustainably managed, FSC-certified forests. The new packaging material is not only fully recyclable but also promotes sustainability through tree regeneration and replanting.
The avocados are presented in pairs in co-branded packaging that provides an extra layer of protection, guaranteeing product quality until it reaches customers. Paul Nieduszynski, CEO of Sysco GB, emphasizes that this innovation is part of the company's ongoing effort to reduce its environmental footprint. He also mentioned that Fresh Direct has already eliminated 50 tons of plastic from its berry packaging, underscoring the importance of gradually introducing sustainable changes with its suppliers.
This development reinforces Fresh Direct's commitment to sustainability and environmental protection, demonstrating that it is possible to implement practical and eco-friendly solutions in the restaurant sector. With this initiative, the company hopes to inspire other suppliers to follow suit and adopt more sustainable practices in their operations.
