Europe surpasses 1,000 containers per week, driven by Peru, while smaller sizes lead the demand

During week 25, the European avocado market received an estimated 1,055 containers, marking a 9% increase compared to the previous week. With this figure, Europe has returned to the 1,000-container-per-week mark, a sign of the rebound in fruit exports to the continent.

Supply continues to be dominated by Peru, which accounts for 82% of the total. This country not only increased its volume by 8% compared to the previous week, but also reached its highest point of shipments to the European market so far this season. However, the overall volume remains below the peak levels seen in previous weeks, when the total approached 1,200 containers, although at that time the shipments came from a greater variety of origins.

The remaining exporters show a considerably smaller share. Colombia accounts for 8%, registering a significant 30% increase compared to its previous performance. Kenya and Tanzania share 6% of the market, while South Africa's presence has been reduced by almost half with a weekly drop of 50%. Brazil, meanwhile, continues its downward trend, with minimal shipments that continue to decrease as its export window nears its end.

In terms of prices, the picture is mixed. In Spain, prices have remained stable, without major fluctuations. However, in Rotterdam, one of the main entry points for fruit in Europe, a 19% drop was observed in the price of size 18 fruit, while smaller sizes, such as size 30, experienced an 11% increase.

This behavior aligns with what Jorge Molina stated in his weekly column, where he points out that the European spot market continues to absorb smaller sizes more readily, particularly sizes 26 to 32, which maintain stronger demand and less volatile prices.

The evolution of the market in the coming weeks will depend largely on Peru's ability to maintain the pace of shipments, as well as the response of the European consumer to the growing supply of smaller sizes.
