Europe drops below 1,000 containers per week, but maintains a high volume thanks to Peruvian dominance.
For the first time in four weeks, avocado shipments to Europe fell below the 1,000 container mark. Week 19 was estimated at 985 containers, marking an 18% drop compared to the previous week. Even so, the volume remains strong: it is 13% higher than that recorded during the same week last year, reflecting a still-active market despite the temporary decline.
The current market leader is Peru, which dominates the European flow with a 72% share, driven by the reduced presence of fruit from other origins. This growth translates into an estimated 714 shipments from that country. South Africa trails far behind with 12%, followed by Tanzania (8%), Brazil (3%), and Colombia (3%). Spain, although still contributing 2%, has practically finished its season.
Among the countries that increased their volume, Peru stands out, consolidating its rise in Europe, and Kenya, which grew by 6% compared to the previous week, although its volume remains relatively insignificant. The other origins showed declines of varying magnitudes, with the most notable reductions in shipments from South Africa and Spain.
Regarding prices, data collected at the Rotterdam market shows a general downward trend. Both large and small sizes are losing value. For example, size 18 saw a decrease of between 10% and 11%, a drop that was also observed in smaller sizes such as size 30. This suggests a uniform downward pressure across all fruit sizes.
According to analyst Carlos Caña, although a price drop was expected due to increased supply, the decisive factor has been something else: maritime delays. Some routes to key ports like Rotterdam and Algeciras have added extra days to their usual transit times, directly impacting product freshness and forcing price adjustments. The steepest decline has been seen in medium-sized fish, reflecting how logistics continues to have a critical influence on the European market.
