United States: Avocado imports grow 4%, with Mexico leading the way and price changes
The Avobook Report shows that week 49 witnessed a new green wave in the United States: avocados arrived in quantities that exceeded expectations. A total of 1,416 containers crossed the border, marking a 4% increase compared to the previous week. This figure reflects the growing demand for this fruit in the US market, and once again, Mexico plays a leading role.
Mexico dominated with a 97% share of shipments to the United States. Meanwhile, Chile, Colombia, and the Dominican Republic combined accounted for just under 3 million pounds. But not everything was consistent. The fluctuations were surprising: Colombia, for example, saw its shipments fall by 55% compared to the previous week. In contrast, Chile and the Dominican Republic doubled down and managed to double their shipment volumes.
The story, however, was also playing out on the Texas border, where prices hinted at a shift in the balance. During week 50, the value of smaller calibers began to decline. The #70 caliber was the most affected, registering a decrease of up to 5%.
In contrast, larger calibers bucked the trend and maintained their value at high levels. In fact, they registered a slight increase of 1% compared to the previous week.
The avocado market continues its course in a dynamic and competitive environment. While Mexico reaffirms its dominance, other exporters adjust their strategies to gain ground, and the price fluctuates like a barometer of supply and demand.
