The power of avocado: Study reveals benefits of daily consumption
A recent study from Pennsylvania State University suggests that eating an avocado a day could have a significant impact on diet quality. Nutrition researchers Kristina Petersen and Penny Kris-Etherton conducted a study with 1,008 American consumers and found that consuming one avocado daily improved overall diet quality among participants.
This study, designed to investigate whether there is a causal relationship between avocado consumption and diet quality, analyzed changes in the Healthy Eating Index (HEI), based on the National Dietary Guidelines, after adding one avocado daily. Surprisingly, the group that incorporated one avocado a day showed a greater increase in their index score compared to the group that maintained their usual diet.
The researchers noted that this change was due to participants replacing some less healthy foods, such as refined grains and high-sodium foods, with avocados. This practice not only increased vegetable consumption but also suggests a shift toward healthier choices.
Petersen hopes that a healthier diet can help reduce the incidence of chronic and preventable diseases, such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes. It is worth noting that the study was supported by the Avocado Nutrition Center, although it did not participate in the data analysis or interpretation of the study, according to the university.
