The avocado boom: Sales in the United States skyrocket in January
With a steady supply of avocados from Mexico, Brooke Becker, Vice President of Sales at Mission Produce, Inc., highlights the exceptional quality of Mexican fruit this season, emphasizing its high dry matter content, which results in a higher oil content. This latter aspect contributes to a creamy, buttery texture, meeting consumer expectations.
Becker emphasizes his company's commitment to reaching the ideal point of ripeness, essential to boosting sales and providing consumers with a positive experience when cutting, crushing, or mashing avocados at different stages of ripeness.
As the Super Bowl, a major avocado consumption event, approaches, Becker observes a strengthening of demand across the United States, driven by the health resolutions commonly associated with the start of the year. Purchasing patterns reveal that more than 50% of avocado purchases occur one or two days before the big event, according to data from Circana.
Regarding marketing strategies, Becker suggests that retailers promote packaged avocados during the week of January 28th and bulk avocados during the week of February 4th. He also highlights the variety of sizes available to meet consumer needs.
Finally, Becker reports that the market has recently begun to balance out, both in size and price.
