Colombian avocados consolidate their presence in the US and are targeting new markets
With quality as its strategic focus and year-round production, Avocados Planet is boosting the positioning of Colombian avocados in the competitive international market.
Colombian avocados continue to gain ground in international markets, especially in the United States, which has become their natural destination. Juan Camilo Ospina, representative of Avocados Planet, explained that the company exports between one and five containers weekly to the U.S., aiming to maintain consistent shipments year-round. Although Europe and the Middle East are also part of their trade network, the primary focus is on the U.S., where Colombian avocados are very well received due to their similarity to Mexican avocados in flavor and characteristics.
Avocados Planet's strategy is based on quality. The fruit is harvested at its optimal ripeness, ideally with 25% dry matter, ensuring consistency in every shipment. "Colombian avocados aren't large, but they develop very well," noted Ospina, who added that research is already underway to improve size without sacrificing quality. The company works with approximately 70 growers in a cluster of 400 to 450 hectares, promoting a sustainable value chain, from cultivation to direct distribution abroad.
Regarding new markets, Ospina highlighted the first pilot export to Chile, which was well-received in the retail sector, although expansion still faces phytosanitary barriers. Avocados Planet's business vision is clear: sustainable growth, social impact, and responsible production. The company has its own nursery to produce clonal trees, provides technical assistance to more than 100 farming families, and efficiently manages the entire logistics chain, from packaging to ripening control. "We have the infrastructure, logistics, and a team committed to delivering the right product, at the right time and place," he concluded.
