US: Avocado imports rise 12% in week 23, Peru grows 26% and Colombia doubles its shipments

The US avocado market closed week 23 with strong growth, registering 1,522 shipments, a 12% increase compared to the previous week. This increase was primarily driven by the performance of Peru and Colombia, whose shipments experienced significant increases compared to week 22.

The supply continues to be dominated by Mexico, which contributed 53% of the volume, followed by Peru with 19%, California with 18%, and Colombia with 10%. Peru's growth is noteworthy, with shipments increasing by 26% compared to the previous week, while Colombia practically doubled its shipments, consolidating its presence in the North American market.

Regarding price behavior, the larger gauges, along with the 48 gauge, remain stable, trading at similar levels. The 60 gauge also shows stability, although with slight variations, while the smaller gauges exhibit significant movements; in particular, the 84 gauge experienced a 10% increase during the week.

Comparing the current situation with that of last year, it can be seen that the prices of the larger sizes are at values close to those recorded at the end of the Mexican harvest and the first half of 2024. However, sizes 60, 70 and 84 are considerably below the levels reached during the increase of the last season.

From the perspective of market operators, the market remains cautious regarding weather patterns and supply dynamics. Sergio Paz emphasized that, while the rainy season is not yet fully established, recent rainfall in avocado-producing regions will favor the development of this season's fruit. Gary Kevenger described the market's shift in pace as a transition from a sprint to a marathon, noting that the market may be preparing for a future rebound in prices for the sizes preferred by retailers. Finally, Antonio Villaseñor highlighted that no significant changes are expected in the short term, but cautioned that it will be crucial to observe the market's response once the release of the wild avocado harvest begins.
