How Dominic Shrubb took advantage of Peru's weather conditions for his agricultural success
Dominic Shrubb's story as a farmer doesn't follow the traditional path. In 2019, he and his partner, Mery, inherited 20 hectares of land in the Cusco region of Peru. With a clear idea of wanting to grow something, they faced the challenge of choosing the right crop.
After researching and conducting soil tests, they opted for the Hass avocado due to the area's tropical climate and the high global demand for this variety. Thus, their company, Just Ripe Ltd., was born.
However, obtaining the avocado trees wasn't easy, as they wanted to maintain their independence. Finally, they found a local grower who helped them install the irrigation system.
The COVID-19 pandemic added complications, with travel restrictions and difficulties in overseeing the project in person. Despite this, with the collaboration of the local community and the help of trusted individuals, such as Josué Silva, they were able to move forward.
Now, with 5 hectares planted and expansion plans underway, they expect a good harvest this season. Dominic highlights the exceptional growth of the trees and their long-term goal of exporting independently worldwide.
Although he still works as a construction manager, Dominic dreams of expanding his agricultural business in Peru, a dream he never would have imagined a decade ago.
