Colombia and Peru increase their share of the North American market while Mexico reduces its volume

During the close of week 16, the U.S. avocado market saw an adjustment in shipments, reaching approximately 1,312 units between containers and trucks. This figure represented a 12% decrease compared to the previous week and 25% below the volume reached during the same period last year.

Mexico remained the main supplier, accounting for 61% of the total volume, followed by California with 30%. Peru and Colombia, with similar shares of around 4%, completed the group of main exporting countries, while the remaining 1% corresponded to other origins.

Colombia registered the most significant weekly growth, increasing its shipments by 86%. Peru also increased its share with a 28% growth. California reported moderate expansion, while Mexico, in contrast, reduced its volume by 25% compared to the previous week.

In terms of price trends, larger gauges experienced declines. Larger sizes, such as gauge 48, fell between 4% and 5%. Medium gauges, such as 60 and 70, remained stable during the same period.

In his market projections, Antonio Villaseñor noted that California's production, operating at maximum capacity, could lead to an increase in smaller fruit in the coming weeks. This trend would be compounded by volumes from Mexico and Colombia, further increasing the pressure on smaller sizes.

Meanwhile, Sergio Paz reported that avocado demand during the first two days of week 17 remained at moderate to low levels. According to his observations, there were no signs of increased demand in anticipation of Cinco de Mayo promotions, a date that typically represents a peak sales period for avocados in the United States.

Regarding the anticipated Cinco de Mayo, Gary Clevenger noted that retail and foodservice buyers are increasing their commitments in preparation for Cinco de Mayo promotions, a major driver of annual demand. This is expected to help eliminate excess volume and support stable market conditions through May.
