Colombia promotes domestic consumption of Hass avocados with a sustainable and sporting focus.
Corpohass is working to position this variety in the national market, while advancing towards its goal of consolidating itself as the second largest supplier in the U.S. and strengthening its comprehensive sustainability model.
Although Colombia has focused its Hass avocado strategy on international markets—with 39,000 hectares in production and a projected increase in exports—the domestic market is also gaining importance. Katheryn Mejía, president of the Corporation of Hass Avocado Producers and Exporters (Corpohass), leads campaigns to educate Colombian consumers, who have historically been accustomed to larger, local varieties. The organization promotes Hass avocados as a practical, nutritious option that aligns with healthy habits, especially among young people and athletes, leveraging social media and the Avocados from Colombia brand.
Currently, Hass avocados are cultivated in 250 municipalities across 17 departments, with an additional 16,000 hectares still under development. Mejía highlights the diverse climatic conditions that allow Colombia to produce fruit year-round, though he emphasizes that standardizing agricultural practices and improving road infrastructure remain key challenges. The upcoming opening of the Port of Antioquia is a strategic move to improve logistics and reduce costs, thereby enhancing the competitiveness of Colombian avocados.
The underlying goal is to build a profitable and sustainable agribusiness. Corpohass leads educational and certification programs, such as EduHass , which enable producers and exporters to adopt best practices and meet international standards. The vision is clear: to be a reliable, responsible, and high-quality country of origin for both local and global consumption. “If all stakeholders work together, Colombian avocados can be recognized not only for their flavor and texture, but also for their environmental and social commitment,” Mejía concluded.
