Historic close to Peru's avocado season: concludes with 690,000 tons exported

In a conversation with Avobook, the President of ProHass discussed exports from Peru and how to address the impact on prices of the large volume shipped during the three months of highest shipments.

Although some shipments are still pending, the Hass Avocado Producers and Exporters Association – ProHass – shared figures from its 2025 campaign, having completed 98% of its shipments to various world markets, consolidating itself as the second largest global supplier of the fruit.

The trade association reported a 37% increase in exports, with Europe remaining the primary destination for its avocados. Significant growth was also recorded in strategic markets in Asia and North America.

In conversation with Avoboo k, José Antonio Castro, President of ProHass, shared the numbers of Peru's performance during this season and, in addition, analyzed the impacts on the price that the significant increase in exported volumes had in Europe.

- What are the volumes with which the Peruvian avocado season is concluding? What percentage increase do these figures represent compared to last year?

“In March 2025, ProHass projected a 37% growth for the 2025 campaign compared to 2024 and, indeed, a few weeks before the end of the campaign, Peru achieved a milestone in its history, exporting 690,000 tons of Hass avocados, which is equivalent to that 37%.”

- How much of that was allocated to Europe?

“The European market remains the main destination for our exports, with 425,000 tons, representing 62% of our total Hass avocado exports. Other markets also saw significant increases in North America and Asia: Japan experienced a 73% growth, the United States 54%, and China 25%. These advances not only reflect the growing international acceptance of our fruit, but also demonstrate the importance of diversifying export destinations, a key factor for the sustainability and competitiveness of the Peruvian Hass avocado industry.”

- What impact did the price drop between June and early August have due to the large volume during that period?

“If we analyze the European market as our main destination, the volume for this market grew by 36% compared to 2014. For three months, Peru consistently exported more than 4.5 million boxes per week to Europe. This volume definitely put significant pressure on prices. However, if we focus on the positive aspects of this substantial supply, both in terms of timing and volume, coupled with well-structured promotional campaigns, we achieved a significant increase in avocado consumption and, consequently, a substantial growth in demand.”

- What can be done to avoid experiencing those relegations in the coming seasons?

“We must continue investing in promoting our fruit in more European countries. These are processes that, in the best-case scenario, take 5 to 7 years, but we must continue increasing the universe of avocado consumers.”

This year the campaign has been extended until at least the end of September, and there are still shipments available. Will we see this in future campaigns? Could that flatten the price curve?

“It’s ideal to have campaigns with flatter supply curves, and this isn’t just for avocados. It’s ideal for any product. But these curves are determined by the production areas, the concentration of Hass avocados, and the specific varieties in those areas. We hope to extend our campaign at least until the end of September with volumes that will help us flatten the curve for June and July, but it’s not an easy task.”

ProHass issued a statement highlighting the achievement of this campaign, noting that it is the result of an effort by the entire Peruvian avocado production chain: “These results reflect the joint work of producers, exporters and all actors in the industry, and the role that ProHass plays in preparing, consolidating and disseminating weekly reports aimed at both its members and the industry in general.”

The announcement regarding the significant growth in export volume from Peru is a prelude to the VII Latin American Avocado Congress, which will be held in Lima from November 17 to 19, and will bring together leaders, experts and companies from around the world to discuss the challenges and opportunities of the industry.

The organization specified that the official closing report for the 2025 campaign will be published at the end of October, marking the start of projections for the 2026 campaign.
