China expands its Hass avocado suppliers: South Africa joins the market
The trade agreement between South Africa and China to export South African Hass avocados has finally been ratified, marking a milestone in trade relations between the two countries and offering new opportunities for the agricultural market.
After months of negotiations, a trade agreement between South Africa and China to export South African Hass avocados has finally been finalized, according to Westafia Fruit, a leading multinational fresh fruit supplier. This agreement, anticipated since the 2023 BRICS summit, is expected to extend the supply of avocados to China for seven months, from April to October.
The initiative is part of a broader effort to reduce the trade deficit among the BRICS countries, with China leading imports from South Africa. This growth in trade relations reflects a renewed focus on comprehensive partnership, with Chinese President Xi Jinping seeking trade stability and promoting the consumption of African agricultural products.
South Africa's entry as an avocado supplier to China adds to the expansion efforts of the agricultural industry in the African nation. With growing international demand, especially in Europe and the UK, South Africa has experienced remarkable growth in Hass avocado production, establishing itself as the third African country to meet China's stringent export standards, alongside Kenya and Tanzania.
