California gains ground and Peru falls behind in avocado shipments to the US.
In the United States, the avocado market showed an upturn compared to the previous week. A total of 1,589 shipments arrived in the country, of which 79% came from Mexico, 11% from Peru, 9% from California, and the remaining 2% were distributed between Colombia and the Dominican Republic. This volume represents a 3% increase compared to the previous week and remains 23% higher than that recorded during the same period last year.
The distribution by origin also showed significant shifts. California increased its share by 18% compared to the previous week, consolidating a stronger presence in the market, while Peru declined by 16%, reflecting the continuation of a downward trend in its shipments. The other countries maintained relatively stable volumes.
In terms of prices, the signs were also positive. After several weeks of stability, increases were reported across all sizes, with a particular emphasis on medium sizes and, to some extent, large sizes. Size 48 saw an 8% increase, and the other sizes followed suit with upward adjustments.
However, a contrast persists between wholesalers and retailers. As Gary Clevenger warned, “Many retailers point to a disconnect: retail price tags remain high even though wholesale markets are significantly lower, thus limiting consumer demand.”
