Mexico's share of the US avocado market falls, while Peru gains prominence.

At the close of week 21, the U.S. avocado market recorded the arrival of 1,440 shipments, a 3% decrease compared to the previous week. While the total volume remains at similar levels to those observed in recent weeks, a shift in the distribution by origin is evident.

Mexico, historically the main supplier, maintains a 53% share, its lowest so far this year, although it has not yet fallen below half of the total. California ranks second with 27%, followed by Peru with a notable 15%, and Colombia with the remaining 5%.

One of the most significant data points for the period is the growth in volume from Peru, which saw a 53% increase compared to the previous week. This increase contrasts with the 40% drop in shipments from Colombia. Meanwhile, shipments from California remained stable.

In terms of prices, the market showed no significant variations. The 48 caliber saw a slight increase of 2 to 3%, but without a considerable impact on the overall trend.

According to analysis by our columnist Gary Clevenger, the current strong production has been impacted by early arrivals from Peru, leading to lower prices and weakened demand from retailers. However, the expert anticipates that once Mexico completes its transition between harvests, demand for California-grown avocados could improve.

Antonio Villaseñor, for his part, attributes the decline in Mexican exports to climatic factors in recent years that have affected orchard productivity. Meanwhile, Sergio Paz notes that, while some retailer programs have not yet shifted to Peruvian fruit, this does not translate into greater demand for Mexican avocados, but rather a slight stability in consumption from that country.
