Brazil has increased its avocado exports fivefold in ten years
The South American country has achieved growth of over 400% in export volumes and value, consolidating the Netherlands, Argentina and Spain as its main destination markets.
In 2024, Brazil ranked as the world's seventh-largest avocado producer, accounting for 4% of the global harvest. However, its participation in international trade remains limited, with 24,600 tons exported and US$36.3 million in revenue, according to data from FAOSTAT and the Agricultural Outlook Bulletin of the Department of Rural Economy. This performance represents growth of over 400% in the last decade, as sales in 2015 barely reached 4,600 tons and US$6.6 million.
Export growth has accelerated since 2023, thanks to a strategy focused on improving fruit quality and promoting Brazilian products at international fruit fairs and events. The Netherlands led purchases, accounting for 41.1% of revenue, followed by Argentina and Spain. Together, these three markets represented over 80% of sales, with the Netherlands playing a key role as a re-export hub to other European countries.
Brazil cultivates a variety of avocados, both tropical and subtropical, including Hass, Breda, Fortuna, Margarida, and Ouro Verde. The main producing states include São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul, and the Federal District, regions that have driven the industry's expansion and its growing presence in the global market.
