Argentina: The avocado import boom that makes it the most attractive market in Latin America

Argentina is experiencing a unique moment in the avocado market. Over the past three years, imports have shown sustained growth, positioning the country as an increasingly attractive destination for Latin American exporters. According to figures from Avobook, 1,125 containers entered the country in 2023, 1,271 in 2024, and the projection for 2025 reaches 1,346.

The most striking jump occurred in the first seven months of 2025, when the volume already surpassed all previous years. “From January to July of this year, exports have exceeded those of the entire years of 2024 and 2023 combined. Peru has exported more than double its last year's volume, and Chile has not yet begun its 2025-2026 season. Brazil has also surpassed Argentina's exports compared to last year,” Avobook analysts noted.

Argentina's growth is explained not only by volume but also by changes in the market share of exporting countries. Chile remains the main supplier, with 817 containers in 2024 and 649 in 2025, although this decline opened up space for other players. Peru showed a significant leap, doubling its exports in 2025 to 374 containers compared to 182 the previous year. Brazil also consolidated its role, increasing from 239 to 288 containers.

In contrast, Colombia experienced a sharp decline, going from three containers in 2024 to just one in 2025. Mexico, meanwhile, maintains a reduced share with 34 containers this year, a small volume compared to the regional leaders.

Demand concentrated in urban areas

The surge in avocado consumption in Argentina has not gone unnoticed by importers and distributors. Miguel Bauza, from the company Don Jaime, analyzed that “the increase in avocado consumption in Argentina is neither accurately projected nor measured. I think Chileans are more excited about Argentina than Argentina itself. This doesn't mean that Argentina won't consume the amount of avocados shipped from Chile, but if Chile needs to export all the avocados they project, prices will have to drop considerably.”

According to Bauza, consumption is heavily concentrated in the country's most urbanized and populous provinces: “Argentina is very much dominated by Buenos Aires, without a doubt. But you also have markets like Santa Fe, Rosario, Córdoba, and even Mendoza. And from Mendoza southward, to Neuquén, Río Negro, and Chubut, avocados are also consumed.”

One notable aspect is that the expansion of avocado consumption in Argentina has not been the result of marketing campaigns or positioning strategies. Bauza emphasizes that “avocado consumption isn't promoted in any special way. There's no advertising, nothing like that, simply because it's a time of year for healthy eating and, well, because of all the benefits it offers.”

The distributor also emphasizes the role of nutrition specialists and social media in making avocados a part of everyday diets: “Nutritionists themselves are recommending it. And, well, there’s already a high level of awareness that it’s a food with a lot of beneficial properties and that it’s healthy.”

With rapidly growing imports, a more diversified supplier base, and Argentine consumers increasingly incorporating avocados into their diets, the country is positioning itself as an expanding market. The challenge, according to both distributors and analysts at Avobook, will be finding the balance between supply and the actual capacity for local consumption, in a context where prices could dictate the course of the business.
