Apeajal: “We will more than double our avocado production for the U.S.”

Jalisco Avocado Exports to the United States: Promising Growth. Avocado exports from Jalisco to the United States have registered significant growth in the last two years. In the 2022-2023 season, Jalisco exported 42,834 tons of avocados to the United States, representing 45% of the state's total exports. The president of the Jalisco Avocado Producers and Packers Association (Apeajal), Eleazer Oceguera, described the season as "very good," despite the challenges the industry has faced, such as climate change and the demand for larger sizes from the U.S. market. Oceguera emphasized that the most important lesson the industry has learned is the importance of dry matter content. "We have become very demanding and are very responsible for sending fruit that has sufficient dry matter, that is a good product, that can be consumed," he said. The president of Apeajal also noted that the industry is working to meet the size requirements demanded by the U.S. market. “We are working in the orchards and in post-harvest handling to ensure the avocados arrive healthy and are a high-quality product,” he said. For the 2023-2024 season, Oceguera anticipates that avocado exports from Jalisco to the United States will double. “We still have plenty of fruit for this major event coming up,” he said, referring to the Super Bowl. “Producers are preparing with quality fruit; there will be a good volume, and I think we will represent Mexico well.”
