Germany's avocado imports have increased fivefold in a decade: Peru, Colombia, and Chile are the main suppliers.
Germany has seen a dramatic increase in its avocado imports over the past decade, multiplying their volume fivefold. According to recent data from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), in 2023, the European country imported nearly 157,800 tons of this popular green fruit, valued at approximately €484 million. This massive increase represents a 402% growth since 2013.
The main suppliers of avocados to the German market are Peru, Colombia, and Chile. In 2023, Peru topped the list with 49,200 tons, followed closely by Colombia with 15,800 tons and Chile with 14,500 tons. These three South American countries accounted for half of all of Germany's avocado imports last year.
Compared to a decade ago, in 2013, Germany imported around 31,400 tons of avocados, valued at approximately €68.3 million. These figures reflect a significant shift in the demand for and consumption of avocados in Germany over the years.
This increase in avocado imports to Germany could be related to the growing interest in healthy eating and culinary trends that include this versatile and nutritious fruit. Furthermore, the popularity of dishes like guacamole and the trend toward a more mindful diet may be contributing to this increased demand for avocados in the European country.
