Avocado and mango: Vélez-Málaga announces ambitious plans to lead world tropical fruit production
At its first meeting, the Interprofessional Avocado and Mango Association addressed several crucial aspects for the sector, such as financing, budgets, and the promotional plan. This organization, which encompasses the entire value chain of both fruits, including production and marketing associations, recognizes the socioeconomic importance of these crops in rural areas, both for the employment they generate and for their impact on local economic development.
The president of the Interprofessional Association, Enrique Colilles, highlighted the challenges facing the Spanish sector, such as increasing avocado and mango consumption to match that of other consuming countries like the United States and Chile, and establishing quality standards to ensure product consistency. He also emphasized the positive role these crops play in the environment, due to their ability to absorb CO2 and improve soil quality.
Colilles expressed a positive stance toward sector unity and an interprofessional approach to addressing these challenges, noting that the organization will facilitate the necessary funding to implement the proposed actions. The goal is to position Spain as a world leader in the production and value of avocados and mangoes. The next meeting is scheduled for March 14, where the initial action proposals will be analyzed.
