Beyond Hass: The strategy to position the Fuerte avocado
Ecuador
The agricultural export sector is a constantly evolving field, where strategic planning and adaptability determine the success of a campaign. Today, as we find ourselves in the final phase of our avocado export season, we reflect on the challenges and opportunities that have marked this period, especially in the case of the Piel Verde - Fuerte avocado, a variety still seeking to consolidate its position in the international market.
Our campaign, which runs from September to June, has had two key windows for the European market: one in October and another between February and March. In this latter phase, we have found favorable conditions in Europe, where temporary shortages have allowed our fruit to enter the market with excellent reception and good prices. This performance reaffirms the importance of understanding market dynamics and acting precisely at the right time.
One of the most significant milestones this season has been the consolidation of the Fuerte avocado, which, despite being only our second year of exports, has successfully positioned itself in both marketing windows. While the Hass avocado dominates global demand and has been part of our portfolio for four years, the acceptance of the Fuerte demonstrates that there is room to diversify our offerings and cater to different market segments.
However, the outlook also presents challenges. The imminent arrival of larger volumes of Peruvian avocados to the European market compels us to rethink our strategy. Instead of competing directly, we will use this pause to strengthen our presence in nearby markets and explore new opportunities in other regions. The possibility of a window in May and June, when the first waves of Peruvian fruit arrive, offers us another alternative to extend the season.
Beyond the current situation, we are focused on the future. We have already begun agronomic, nutritional, and phytosanitary work for the 2025-2026 season, with the goal of improving the productivity, size, and quality of our fruit. Our aim is to continue expanding in Europe, but also to consolidate our position in Russia, the Middle East, North America, and other strategic markets.
The journey of the Fuerte avocado reflects the spirit of agricultural exports: a balance between risk and opportunity, patience and strategy. In a world where the demand for healthy foods continues to rise, the key lies in adaptability, product quality, and a long-term vision.
