The current reality of the avocado market: a detailed analysis

Canada

Global fruit markets are dynamic and affect all of us involved, directly or indirectly. Understanding the current market situation and taking steps to avert disaster is crucial.

Today, markets are saturated due to high supply from major producers. Some of the most affected markets are:

- United States: oversupplied , with California developing its local crop which is preferred by American consumers.

- Mexico, recovering ground, in the development of the normal transition from its local harvest to its main harvest, which for all producing states is their priority and whose natural market is the United States.

- Canada: Collapsed due to low inventory turnover and high fruit supply, especially from Jalisco.

- Europe : High pressure on large and medium sizes, while smaller sizes are expected to see a price recovery. Despite 3% annual growth in consumption, the European market faces challenges in maintaining balance due to oversupply peaks in certain weeks and shortages in others, affecting price stability for all market participants.

In addition to local production, markets are also receiving significant volumes from other sources, such as:

- Peru : It has experienced a significant increase in its avocado exports, with an 18% rise. These volumes continue to grow and are diversifying across active markets. In the United States, Peruvian avocados are primarily destined for programs, although volumes are also being added to the spot market, increasing pressure on the market and affecting prices.

- Colombia : It has been doing interesting work in terms of increasing export volumes to North America, while maintaining stability in its off-season harvest. However, Colombia currently ranks fourth in purchase preference among importers in the American market.

The tariffs imposed by the Trump administration have had a significant impact on the competitiveness of Colombia and other countries subjected to a 10% tax. This has affected Colombia's position in the American market, despite its growth in export volumes.

Emerging markets

Asia remains a developing market for avocados, with gradual growth in consumption. Although producers see a commercial opportunity in this market, it has not yet absorbed significant volumes due to limitations in foreign trade logistics. Asia is expected to become a high-consumption market in the future, but this will take several years.

Although some emerging markets, such as Africa, India, and Russia, are showing positive growth in avocado consumption, they are still not large enough to absorb the current high supply.

TODAY, let's look at where we are and what we have in front of us: a call to review what we can and cannot control from all fields to regulate our supply globally and ensure that it is in line with the demand of the real market.

We ask ourselves, what is the volume that the market truly requires per week, month, year? Today, with oversupplied markets at such low and prolonged prices, we are all being affected by this business. Let's not strive for a perpetually abundant business; let's seek a balanced one where each link in the chain—producers, marketers, intermediaries, exporters, importers, and distributors—achieves a fair and adequate livelihood that allows for the economic and social sustainability of this wonderful industry.
