Peru gains access to Japan to export Hass avocados

Japanese phytosanitary audit enables shipments of Peruvian Hass avocados, strengthening its presence in demanding markets and its global strategy.

The Peruvian avocado industry has reached a new milestone in its international expansion after Japan authorized the export of Hass avocados in the 2026 season. The approval was granted following a phytosanitary audit conducted by the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, which assessed compliance with the demanding standards required by that market.

The process, carried out between March 23 and 27, included inspections of production fields and packing plants, with the participation of producers, especially from the La Libertad region. The Association of Hass Avocado Producers and Exporters of Peru (ProHass) highlighted the coordination between the public and private sectors, key to achieving this new market access.

With this opening, Peru strengthens its position in high-standard markets, backed by internationally recognized production and sanitary control systems. This progress also aligns with the country's strategy to diversify its export destinations and consolidate its presence in Asia, a region with growing demand for Hass avocados.

In terms of volume, the 2026 campaign projects exports exceeding 765,000 metric tons, which would imply a growth of close to 6% compared to 2025. However, the sector anticipates a more moderate expansion, influenced by agro-climatic factors and the alternating behavior of the crop, after a high production season the previous year.
