Mexico projects its largest avocado harvest in 5 years

Favorable weather boosts avocado production in Mexico, while demand in the U.S. grows due to health, demographics and youth consumption.

Mexico is on track to record its largest avocado harvest in the last five years, driven primarily by favorable weather conditions in key regions like Michoacán . According to Pedro Somarriba , the balance between rainfall, temperatures, and volcanic soils has allowed for abundant production, resulting in lower but stable prices. This stability has benefited retailers, facilitating consistent promotions and a dynamic flow of product in the U.S. market.

Demand, however, is not solely driven by supply. Structural factors such as the growing interest in health, the impact of new eating habits, and the role of avocados as a source of healthy fats have been key. Added to this is the significant Hispanic population in the United States, whose consumption far exceeds the national average, as well as the growing popularity of avocados among younger generations who are incorporating them into their daily diets, solidifying their status as an everyday food.

The market's dynamism is also reflected in the increase in imports. During the first quarter of 2026, the United States registered a 33% increase in import volumes compared to the same period of the previous year, demonstrating sustained demand. While Jalisco has gained prominence following its export liberalization, Michoacán continues to dominate the supply, while other regions such as the State of Mexico could join in the near future.

In this context, geographic proximity remains Mexico's main competitive advantage over other global suppliers. The ability to deliver fresh fruit to the U.S. market in less than 48 hours contrasts sharply with the long transit times from South America. Furthermore, growing consumption in Europe and Asia opens new opportunities for expansion, positioning Mexican avocados as a key player in the international market in the coming years.
