Evolution of avocados in the US over the last decade

Avocado is becoming a weekly habit in the US, driven by the omnichannel consumer and new trends such as its consumption alongside protein.

Over the past decade, avocados have undergone a significant transformation in the United States, evolving from an occasional purchase to a staple in the weekly shopping basket. What was seen in 2016 as a symbol of healthy eating and a culinary trend is now positioned as a solid category in both retail and restaurants.

One of the main drivers of this growth is the omnichannel consumer. In 2025, 21% of US households combined online and in-store purchases, compared to 5% in 2019. This group stands out for its high purchase frequency, buying avocados up to 16 times a year and spending an average of $59, figures that exceed by 50% those who shop exclusively in physical stores.

Meanwhile, the rise of high-protein diets has redefined the role of avocados. Although not a protein source itself, their contribution of healthy fats, fiber, and flavor makes them an ideal complement to high-protein meals. This trend is also reflected in spending: when avocados are purchased alongside protein-rich products, the average purchase price increases significantly, demonstrating their ability to generate additional sales.

Looking ahead to 2026, avocados are maintaining their steady growth, solidifying their position as a food that combines nutritional value, versatility, and adaptation to new consumption habits. More than just a trend, avocados have become fully integrated into the daily lives of modern consumers, reaffirming their place as one of the most dynamic products in the food market.
