Chile consolidates its position as the second largest consumer of avocados in the world

Per capita avocado consumption in Chile reaches 8.6 kilos per year

Avocados are one of the most consumed fruits in Chile, reflecting a growing preference for this food in the daily diet. According to figures from the Chilean Avocado Committee, in 2024 annual per capita consumption reached 8.6 kilos, surpassing the 8.2 kilos recorded in 2023. This positions the country as the second largest consumer of Hass avocados in the world, second only to Mexico, where per capita consumption is 10.3 kilos annually.

Francisco Contardo, executive director of the Avocado Committee, highlighted that local demand continues to grow steadily, reinforcing the importance of avocados in the Chilean diet and their contribution to a healthy lifestyle. Furthermore, while domestic consumption increased by 4.87% in 2024, exports grew by 13.7% during the same period, according to data from the Central Bank.

This increased demand has led to almost half of the national production (45%) being destined for the domestic market, while the remainder is exported to strategic markets such as Latin America, the United States, Europe, and Asia. With an economic impact of over $700 million annually, avocados have become a key driver of the country's agricultural development, benefiting both small and large producers, along with the entire distribution chain.

The Avocado Committee has also focused its efforts on the sector's sustainability, implementing a roadmap aligned with UN goals since 2021 and promoting responsible production standards. With this sustained growth in consumption and production, Chile reaffirms its role as a key player in the global avocado market.
