Two months after the start: mixed signs in Morocco's avocado campaign
Morocco
We are approaching the start of the smooth-skinned avocado season in Morocco, specifically for Green Skin varieties such as Zutano and Bacon. With just two months until the harvest begins, the sector is currently taking stock, a period marked by contrasts.
In the case of Hass avocados, a significant drop has been recorded due to the extreme heat wave that affected the country in early June. Temperatures were particularly high for what avocado cultivation can tolerate, resulting in an estimated 20% reduction in production from older orchards.
However, it is important to note that Morocco is still a young country in this industry. This emerging nature offers an advantage: the existence of many new farms that could compensate, at least in part, for the decline in productivity seen in the older farms.
Pending further developments in the coming weeks and more precise data at the start of the season, expectations remain cautious. While conditions have not been ideal, the relative youth of the Moroccan sector and its capacity for expansion could offset the effects of a challenging start.
