California Avocado Update: Volume increases and prices decrease as the season progresses

USA

California's avocado harvest continues to gain momentum, with last week's activity showing solid movement and strong grower participation in the northern harvesting regions. Nearly 11 million pounds of fruit were harvested, bringing inventories to just under 13 million pounds, a clear indication that the season is in full swing.

Prices experienced a slight decline from recent averages, dropping from around $60 per case to $57, as volume continues to flow and retailers adjust to the increased availability.

The maximum sizes remain 48, 60, and 70, with size 60 seeing increased demand from retailers thanks to a more attractive "per unit" price at the store level. Retail buyers have clearly adapted to changing consumer preferences, favoring size 60 over larger sizes in recent weeks.

The strong volume has allowed for promotional flexibility for late April and May. Regarding the variety, we are starting to see more Gem avocados on the market, although we haven't yet reached peak Gem volume. This season is expected to produce around 8-9 million pounds of Gem, which tend to be larger, generally in the 32-60 cm range.

These larger sizes could offer some good advertising opportunities as volume increases. Favorable weather has kept the harvest going and encouraged grower activity. With stable conditions forecasted, we expect a similar harvest volume this week, with a possible increase later in the week as we prepare for the May 5th surge.

Beyond California, all eyes are on the import landscape. With tariffs now affecting Peru, Chile, and Colombia, it will be interesting to see how these countries adjust their export strategies to the U.S. market. California's early-season strength may position it well to fill any short-term supply gaps or shifts in retail focus.

We will continue to closely monitor market movements as volumes increase and promotions intensify in the coming weeks.

That's all for this week! See you in the next update.
