Kenyan avocado faces logistical pressure and competition

Kenyan avocado exports are progressing despite challenges in Europe, but remain stable thanks to Asia and local industrial demand.

Kenya 's avocado export season is progressing more slowly due to a challenging environment in both logistics and international competition. Despite this, markets such as the Middle East, China, India, and Turkey continue to show strong demand, especially for the Fuerte variety in medium and small sizes, which is helping to partially sustain the season's pace.

In contrast, the European market presents greater challenges. The strong presence of Hass avocados from Peru has created a highly competitive environment, slowing sales for Kenyan exporters. This pressure is primarily reflected in the spot market, where prices have tended to fall, although contracts remain at levels similar to the previous season.

The geopolitical context has also influenced the campaign's development. Tensions in the Middle East have affected key maritime routes such as the Red Sea, increasing transit times and logistical costs, while air freight has become more expensive. However, shipments to Asia have shown resilience, helping to offset difficulties in other regions.

Despite weakness in Europe, Kenyan avocado prices are achieving some stability thanks to domestic demand, particularly from the processing industry. This factor has become a key support for producers, in a scenario where market diversification and logistical adaptation are fundamental to maintaining the sector's competitiveness.
