Destination Rotterdam

Chili

Europe accounts for most of Chile's avocado exports, especially during the off-season window, when local supply is limited and demand remains high.

In this context, Rotterdam has established itself as the main gateway for Chilean fruit to Europe, handling more than 50% of the volume arriving on the continent. Its importance stems not only from the size of the port but also from its strategic role within the European logistics chain.

The infrastructure of the Port of Rotterdam — characterized by a high capacity for refrigerated containers (reefers), efficient rail connections and an extensive transport network by barges and trucks — positions it as a key logistics hub for the redistribution of fresh fruit to major markets in Central and Northern Europe, such as Germany, France, the United Kingdom and Scandinavia.

From this scenario, some central questions arise that we will address in this article:

How is he/she treated from Chile?

The main shipping lines offer direct, weekly services from the main ports in central Chile, such as Valparaíso (Maersk, MSC) and San Antonio (CMA, Hapag-Lloyd), with very competitive transit times of 24 to 26 days. Since these shipments require specialized equipment—Controlled Atmosphere containers—planning is essential, and shipping lines require clients to schedule their voyages well in advance.

Future plans .

One of the main sources on the Port of Rotterdam's long-term strategic vision is the document "Port Vision 2050", which outlines objectives and priorities to make the port the most competitive, sustainable and resilient in Europe by 2050.

Main themes of the vision:

  • Climate neutrality by 2050, with a strong focus on circular economy.
  • Smart and clean logistics through digitalization, sensors and new technologies.
  • Circular and competitive industry, reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
  • Improved environmental quality and coexistence with nearby urban areas.
  • The future job market will be more diverse and accessible.
  • Resilience to geopolitical and supply crises, by diversifying import sources.

This plan was adopted by the Rotterdam City Council in December 2025 and officially published by the Port Authority

Is there any port that can compete with it ?

Port of Antwerp (Belgium)

Europe's second largest port in terms of total cargo volume and container traffic, with excellent multimodal connectivity (ship + rail + road).

It has a high capacity to handle reefer (refrigerated containers) important for fruit.

Its location in the heart of Europe allows it quick access to the German, French and other key economies.

Port of Hamburg (Germany)

Leading port in Germany and one of the main ones in Western Europe.

Very strong in intermodal logistics (rail + road) to markets in central and eastern Europe.

Its recent growth has positioned it as an operational alternative, especially if Rotterdam or Antwerp face congestion.

Ports in the Mediterranean (Valencia, Algeciras, Barcelona)

Although not as large as Rotterdam or Antwerp in total traffic, they are strategic ports for importing Mediterranean cargo and are experiencing strong growth.

Its geographical advantage is the fast connection to southern Europe and Mediterranean routes, which may be of interest to exporters looking for direct or combined rail alternatives to northern Europe.

Port of Vigo (Spain)

While not comparable in size to the first major European hubs, it is gaining ground on direct routes to South America for perishable goods. This alternative is being strengthened by dedicated refrigerated container ships from South America, which could translate into less transshipment and reduced cold chain times for exported fresh fruit.

Conclusion

Given the Port of Rotterdam's characteristics—its advanced infrastructure for refrigerated containers, efficient rail and river connections, and its specialized service to Chilean exporters—coupled with its ambitious strategic plans outlined in Port Vision 2050, the port maintains a leading position that is difficult to surpass. While other important European ports exist, such as Antwerp, Hamburg, Valencia, and Vigo, none combine the scale, connectivity, and logistical specialization that distinguish Rotterdam. For these reasons, Rotterdam will continue to be the main gateway for Chilean fruit into Europe, consolidating its role as a strategic hub for the distribution of perishable goods on the continent.
