Avocado dynamics in week 29: Europe and North America at the epicenter of global trade

The avocado market is at a peak this week, particularly in Europe, where the last and largest shipments from Peru are arriving. Quantities from Peru are expected to gradually decrease, leading to improved prices in this market. Currently, the Spanish market has reference prices of €12.60 per box of size 20 avocados, an indicator of strong demand and the ongoing supply adjustment.

In this context, Colombia maintains an 8% share of the European market, still under the leadership of Peru. However, it is worth noting the growing prominence of products of African origin, with Kenya at the forefront, which are increasingly consolidating and expanding their presence.

On the other hand, the North American market presents itself as an attractive alternative for Colombian exporters, who take advantage of the logistical and commercial benefits offered by fixed-price programs. These programs reduce the risks inherent in the spot market, providing greater stability for exporters. Currently, Colombia also holds an 8% share of the US market, which is led by Mexico and California. The benchmark price for a box of size 48 Mexican fruit at the Texas border is US$47.

In Colombian fields, Hass avocado producers are facing a period of limited fruit availability, a situation expected to persist for another couple of weeks. While exports will not stop, a decrease in export volumes is anticipated, reflecting current production conditions.

Looking ahead, the European market is gearing up for the holiday season, while Peru is bringing its harvest forward by four weeks compared to previous years. Conditions are favorable: good flowering in the production fields and a dynamic European market with solid prices. All stakeholders in the supply chain are already preparing for the campaign, which will run from September 2024 to March 2025.

In summary, the avocado market is showing strong momentum with positive prospects in both Europe and North America. Colombian exporters are strategically positioned to capitalize on emerging opportunities, while remaining attentive to market fluctuations and production conditions.
